The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

At the center of the captivating rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His being was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his herd of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his charges instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! read more There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but found no beast.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
